In all the years that Montana has been around, there has never been any                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       
complaints about the motto: Oro y Plata (Gold and Silver). Shortly after Montana                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              
had gained territorial status, a committee, chaired by Mr. Francis Thompson, got                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              
together to determine an appropriate design for a state seal. Since that time, members                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        
favored 'Gold and Silver' as the motto for the Montana Territory. A bill was signed                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           
into law by Territorial Governor Sidney Edgerton Feb 9, 1865 declaring such..
