Bad Bill Bob's Commentary on HB30
This bill will allow young folks ages 16-18 to serve as election judges. Though
the bill does not allow them to serve as a chief judge, it will still open the doors for
our polling places to be 'run' by folks who are not qualified to vote.
It is absolutely critical that the integrity of our election process be protected. To pass
a law that allows non-qualified electors to serve as election judges is heading down
the wrong path. This bill should serve as a sharp reminder that our state's
Clerk and Recorders are needing help. It is time for all citizens who are qualified to
vote to step up to the plate and volunteer - thus making this bill unneeded.
This is not an original idea. In fact, it comes from Chicago, Illinois, from a
non-profit group called Mikav Challenge. During this last Presidential election cycle,
a group called ACORN was proven to be involved in election fraud. If something
like a disputed election happened in Montana, could a minor election judge be held
for legal recourse in a court of law? In certain circumstances a minor s signature
is not legal.
Election judges have to sign many legal documents. Is it legal for a minor to do this?
What are the child labor laws regarding how many hours a minor can work in a day?
Most elections, election judges can put in over 16 hours per day.
